To promote Latvian language learning availability and quality as well as on-line skills development, society "Shelter "Safe House"" provides an opportunity learn the language in Moodle environment.
- possibility to acquire language at any convenient place and time;
- possibility of constant and independent self-assessment using tests;
- possibility to revise and improve knowledge of difficult areas;
- option such as ”Forum” allows to learn the Latvian grammar more efficiently. For instance, one course participant asks an online question, but the answer is received by all the registered users of the course.
Because of its simplicity and flexibility, the e-learning platform Moodle is one of the most popular in the world, offering a wide spectrum of resources for development and implementation of various educational courses. The e-learning system allows both to develop and publish materials for e-learning as well as to create various types of interactive tasks, for instance, online tests and exercises, educational games, and communication tools such as forum and chat. Application of this specially developed e-learning environment allows not only to place interactive materials and tasks online, but also to ensure consecutive language acquisition, using various tools of assessment, which determine the availability of learning materials according to every individual’s level of knowledge.

The Moodle environment for learning Latvian was developed within the project “Diverse Solutions for Public Education and Integration” which was implemented between December 19, 2013 and June 30, 2013. The tool is being developed further “Diverse Solutions for Public Education and Integration 2” which is being implemented by society "Shelter "Safe House"" between January 9, 2014 and June 30, 2014. E-learning environment of the Latvia University of Agriculture, developed on the basis of the world known e-learning management system, was used for preparation, development and implementation of the Moodle course. The above mentioned Moodle platform allows everyone to choose the most suitable place (even before moving to Latvia) and time for learning, as well as individual learning tempo. Constant self-assessment and positive results definitely increase the course participants’ self-esteem and motivation to continue learning the Latvian language.
